The coating on your being that repels experience is a lack of appreciativeness. It is the attribute of a lack of gratitude.
So you have to understand that at the root of our criminality is the conviction that we’re not worthy or that we are owed more, that the world is not worthy.
If we are smart enough with how we respond to trauma, the aftermath of it is an experience of awe. The self is led to a place where it stops controlling. It turns its gazes to that which is vast and overwhelming, and from the position of gratitude, appreciates its magnificence.
