How to write a speech quickly

My father, the late Dr Bruckner de Villiers (1923 – 2000) was a pastor in the day 1955-60, until he was excommunicated (but that’s another story).

He knew how to write a speech quickly.

He had to write a ‘keynote speech’ once a week, for close on 5 years.

I asked him how he came up with ideas for his sermons and wrote them so quickly.

“Simple”, he said. “Write from your own experience.

So, if you’re going to be a prolific speechwriter, make sure you have a prolific life full of (mis)adventure so that your speeches will be filled with tales to keep us enthralled.

• Write from personal experience
• Tell a story … make a point
• Have only 3 points
• Have a impactful opening
• Finish strong with an action/benefit closing statement
